Abu Dhabi – Not just a stopover

If you are taking a trip to europe or north america and have a few days for a stop over then chances are that you will first look at some of the usual destinations such as singapore Hong Kong or Dubai. But if you fancy a change of scenery, or just don’t want a busy bustling city experience, then try Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.

Yas Island has all you need for a few days of relaxation and fun, and suits families and couples alike. For the thrill seekers there is Ferrari World, an adrenalin fuelled undercover theme park which boasts the world’s fastest rollercoaster, as well as two other coasters and heaps of attractions celebrating the historic sports car brand. Don’t worry if you re not a rev head either, it’s fun for everyone, but if it’s really not your thing don’t worry, you can walk straight through into Yas Mall, Abu Dhabis largest with over 270 shops including many international brands, and some great places to eat. There’s also a movie theatre showing the latest releases, and as English is widely spoken in Abu Dhabi the movies are in their original format.

For you water lovers there is Yas Beach, a lovely stretch of sandy goodness on the edge of the beautiful Arabian waters, plus if you haven’t had enough of theme parks yet there is Ferrari World’s sister park Yas Waterworld, and you can get tickets enabling entry into both. This is a truly stunning water park with some exciting rides and plenty for the younger members of the family too. A great way to cool off in the Arabian heat.

Anyone needing even more adrenalin should look no further than the Yas Marina Circuit, well known to motor racing fans and home to the season-ending F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in November. There are companies based at the circuit who offer on track experiences in high-powered sports cars such as Aston Martin’s and Porsches, and even open-wheel single seat racing cars! There’s one for you bucket-listers.

For a bit of culture the city is only thirty minutes away and has the Sheik Zayed Bin Sultan Grand Mosque, a magnificent building and the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates. Also opening soon on Saadiyat Island is The Louvre, Abu Dhabi, and a branch of The Guggenheim Museum is following. You can also book tours that will pick up from your hotel, and a firm favourite is the Desert Sundowner Dune Safari which takes you out into the Desert for a bit of 4×4 fun and a dinner under the stars.

Staying on Yas Island is easy. there are a good few hotels to choose from, many of which are located together in Yas Plaza. For a touch of luxury though try Yas Viceroy, a beautiful five star hotel with excellent service and facilities, and is the only hotel in the world to span a motor racing circuit. Two rooftop pools, a spa, and some top class restaurants are just the beginning.clive abu 5

Getting there is also easy as Yas Island is only ten to fifteen minutes from Abu Dhabi’s International airport, or if you are an Emirates/Qantas stalwart you can book your ticket through to Abu Dhabi and catch the courtesy Emirates bus from Dubai Airport. A private vehicle transfer will take around an hour and a quarter from Dubai International Airport.
